Aims and Philosophy
President's Desk

Aims

To promote recognition of the professional status of interpreters.

To promote, foster and improve the art and professionalism of Auslan interpreters.

To assist in the advancement of interpreting skills and the development of linguistic fluency.

To maintain communication with consumers and employers of interpreting services.

To advocate and protect the rights of interpreters

To promote compliance and adherence with the Code of Ethics for interpreters

To liaise, advise and co-operate with, or lobby any relevant government department or other organisation, group or individual in the pursuance of the association’s objectives and purposes.

To consult and collaborate with industry and community stakeholders to provide counsel on issues relevant to the interpreting industry

To collate, disseminate and provide relevant information on interpreting issues

To raise funds to further the objects of ASLIA (WA)

To promote the aims, policies and views of ASLIA (WA) in the wider community

Philosophy

ASLIA (WA) BELIEVES IN:

Equal access and opportunity;

Accepting diversity and difference;

The empowerment and independence of consumers of interpreting services;

A socio- cultural model of deafness as difference;

Respecting Auslan as the language of the Australian Deaf community;

Striving for the pursuit of professional excellence;

Strongly supporting the rights of interpreters and encouraging their professional development.

 

 To contribute to and foster a collaborative environment whereby interpreters can be invigorated and inspired to work towards contemporary standards and excellence in Auslan interpreting.
